"The unexamined life is not worth living" - Socrates

Do you know what you want, and can you explain WHY you want it? Socrates believed that to be successful in life, you have to know yourself.

Let us be 100% honest - If you knew that doing the right thing in your life or career would ruin your reputation or cost you some friends, would you do it anyway? The road to success requires making tough decisions. Charting your own course in life means leaving some people behind. Do you have the backbone to stand firm in your convictions? Setting the tone will not always bring popularity, but it will bring respect.

Ask yourself the tough questions and know the answers. Examining your life is not a one time proposition. It is an ongoing routine. Always be prepared to take a stand for what you believe. Never be ashamed to live your convictions.

"Vision without action is merely a dream" - Joel A. Barker

Action without vision just passes the time. Vision with action can change the world. How many people plan to start their diet on Mondays? They have a clear vision to lose 10 lbs, but the "action" aspect never gets off the ground.

Ask yourself: What is your vision? Do you have one? Is it clear?

Putting it into words will help cement it into your psyche. It will also make it easier to communicate to other people. If you can't physically accomplish your vision, write it down! A great man once said, "If you can think it, you can do it".

Once you have your vision, and you have your mind fixed upon it, don't be distracted. Be aware when something or someone is coaxing you away from your vision. IE. a job opportunity comes up, which takes you in a completely different direction.

"The money is excellent", you say.

No, stand firm. What are you willing, or not willing, to do to stay the course and see your dream become a reality?

"Knowledge is power" - Randeep Hooda

You have now examined yourself, your vision is clear, and you have set a firm foundation for future success. There is only one thing left to do: Start learning everything there is to know about it!

If sales is your game, soak up all the knowledge that has ever been written on the subject. Know the history of it. Study the most successful salesmen of all time and know what made them successful. Seek to know about each type of sales. Study the different sales methods, marketing vs. sales and how they differ, strategies, techniques. Then go back to you, learn what type of salesperson are you?

Word of warning, though: Learning can be fun and all consuming - Don't just learn, make sure to put yourself out there and execute!

In Conclusion

Notice how the path always leads us back to examining ourselves? Life works better when we plug our natural gifts and passions into our chosen career path. Therefore, we must know what those gifts are. Those gifts can change over the course of our life. To be 4'11" and to insist on being a professional basketball player won't get us very far.

To choose a career we really have no passion for, simply because it looks good on paper or brings in a nice paycheck rarely brings success. Thoughts? Please share with me on Twitter @JoonasAleksi
